Support Time Ep11. Creative Jobs
While there are many common jobs in our society, there are also less common ones that exist. The guest writer of this episode enjoys analyzing dreams, but he isn’t sure if this can earn enough money to live on. This reminds me of a story about two businesspeople who went to Africa to sell shoes. One of them felt discouraged because he found that people in Africa didn’t wear shoes. In contrast, the other one felt excited because he saw that no one had shoes yet, meaning there was a huge market potential.
Recently, a teenager I know has been considering her future, hesitating between choosing a stable job or pursuing something that truly interests her. I believe many of us have faced the same dilemma. To resolve this, the first step is to become aware of our own interests and strengths. The reason for this is that if we want to excel in a certain field, dedicating enough time is crucial. To stay committed to something, enthusiasm and passion are key—except in some special cases. On the other hand, while it’s ideal to do something we love, we can’t ignore the reality of needing to earn enough money to live and support our families.
When we factor reality into our plans, many options open up. For example, we can choose to earn enough money first before pursuing our dreams, pursue both simultaneously, chase our dreams directly and accept financial hardships, or even make earning money itself a dream or goal.
Beyond reality, the size of our dreams and their feasibility are also important. One truth I’ve mentioned before is that people are often terrible at making predictions. So, it’s no surprise that there are big gaps between our objectives and reality.
The value of having objectives is that they help us decide on a direction and make a plan. Once we have a direction and a plan, we can set the objectives aside and focus on what’s in front of us, enjoying life as it unfolds.
Sometimes, the result isn’t as important. In many stories, what we truly enjoy is the process—the moments that make us laugh or cry. If we can think this way, we relieve ourselves from worry and focus on what we can control, allowing us to enjoy the process.
