Support Time Ep2. What’s the meaning of work

Support Time Ep.2: What’s the Meaning of Work

This letter is from a salaryman who couldn’t feel enthusiastic about his work and started to feel confused about the meaning of work.

I think being able to notice your own emotions is very good.Emotions are signals that remind us to improve something or move on. In Asia, people don’t often think about what they really want. Our society has a life framework where people choose a university they can get into and a job they can secure, as if following a set path. It would be fine if everyone had the same needs and felt the same about their job or lifestyle, but they don’t.

In the Western world, the culture encourages young people to think and express their opinions. In contrast, in Asia, students often study hard but aren’t trained to think critically.

I am also a typical Asian student. I chose a university I could get into and a job I could do, without really understanding my own needs. However, things changed after I quit my first job and studied abroad. I lost the predefined path of my life during that time, which gave me a chance to think and discover myself.

Finding the meaning of work is a difficult question because there isn’t a standard answer for everyone. Still, everyone can learn how to think and make their own decisions.

The first step is to start with your feelings. Notice if you feel anxious or bored about your job, and try to identify where these emotions come from. List the things you hate and the things you love about your job. Once you find the reason, think about whether it’s fixable and how to fix it. If it’s not fixable, you may need to find a new job. A suitable job should not only provide enough to support your living needs but also make you happy or serve as a step towards realizing your dreams.
