Viewpoint 001. Interaction with environment

今天開始英文寫作練習
我考慮了幾種不同的材料
像是日常生活、短篇小說
或是主題式探討

最後我選擇了主題式探討
感覺這比小說簡單
又比日常生活內容豐富一些

我原本還想一天說不定能寫很多主題
但才寫了一篇就花了兩個小時
這應該也可以拿來當podcast的主題
一魚多吃!

001. 人與環境的互動

人在面對不同對象時
能夠切換自己的角色
然而即便是獨自一人
也會依據環境的不同
而有不同的心情和行為模式

舉例來說
我發現在房間裡很難專心念書
也許是我把房間和放鬆感
連結在一起了

為了要更有效率
我常去咖啡館或圖書館待著
這些地方可以改變我的心情
讓我變成更好的人

有時候儀式感也能轉換人的心情
有些人會喝杯咖啡
提醒自己一天開始了
有些人睡前會做瑜珈或冥想
然後才覺得能放鬆睡覺

住在不同的國家
也會改變人們的心境
當我還住在日本時
一位同事告訴我
她覺得在日本
好像活出了第二人生
在這能感到更加自由
我也有同感

我曾經住在日本、紐西蘭以及加拿大
在這些國家的環境和住民
都非常的不一樣

我喜歡京都
它是個美麗的城市
可以讓我放鬆享受日式文化
以及歷史人文風景

相對的當我在東京工作時
我感到那是個巨大而擁擠的城市
當一開始的新鮮感消退之後
我便漸漸地感到壓力上漲

幾個月前
我住在紐西蘭的一個小鎮
在那的人們比城市人要溫暖
雖然沒什麼娛樂
但我依舊喜歡它

現在我住在卡加利
一個加拿大的大城市
我好像了解到
大城市有大量的資訊
有時會變成壓力的來源
這讓我想起了一部電影
“海上的鋼琴師”

這部電影是關於一位
一生都住在一艘郵輪上的鋼琴師
他曾一度有機會下船
但當他看到廣闊的陸地
覺得不安和害怕
那可比一艘船大太多了
於是他最終沒有下船
選擇了待在他自己的世界

我想我可以體會他的感受
我也比較傾向住在一個
溫暖、簡單、可愛的小鎮

以上是關於我旅居各地的經驗
但有時要轉換心情
並不一定要出國
有時僅是小小的改變
就會產生巨大的影響

例如我在語言學校就讀
只是換了個班級
整個人就變得很活躍

又例如我的同學曾跟我聊到
他在工作時
只是換了個部門
職場氛圍也大不相同
這讓他覺得很開心

所以請不要認為
自己現在的狀態
就定義了所有未來

人在與不同對象相處時
會產生很不一樣的化學反應
你可能很難想像
把自己放到合適的位置時
會感到多麼舒適和充實

希望大家都能活出自己真實的樣子

001. Interaction with environment

People can switch their character when they interact with different people. Even when they are alone, the environment can still affect their mood and behavior.

For example, I find it hard to concentrate in my bedroom, perhaps because I associate it with relaxation. To study more efficiently, I often go to a café or a library. These places change my mood and make me a better man!

Sometimes, rituals can also turn people on or off. Some people drink a cup of coffee to remind themselves to start a new day, while others do yoga or meditate before they go to bed. There are many personal rituals, and you may have some as well.

Living in different countries can also change a person’s behavior. When I was living in Japan, one of my colleagues told me she felt like she was living a second life there. She experienced more freedom than she did in Taiwan. I had the same feeling.

I have lived in Japan, New Zealand, and Canada. The environments and residents in these countries are very different. I love Kyoto, Japan; it’s a beautiful city where I can enjoy the culture and history. In contrast, working in Tokyo, a busy, crowded, and vast city, made me feel stressed after the initial excitement wore off.

A few months ago, I went to New Zealand and lived in a small town. The people there are warmer than those in the city. Despite the lack of entertainment options, I still liked it.

Now I live in Calgary, Canada. It’s a big city, and I’ve realized that big cities have too much information and can be stressful. This reminds me of the movie “The Legend of 1900,” about a pianist who lived his whole life on a ship. He once had the chance to get off the ship but was too scared because the land seemed too vast compared to the ship. So, he stayed on the ship.

I think I have the same feeling as him. I prefer living a simple life in a warm, small, and beautiful town.

So far, I’ve shared my experiences living in various places, but it’s not necessary to live abroad to change your mood. Sometimes, making a small change can significantly affect your life.

For instance, I’m studying in a language school now, I changed my class and it made me a more vibrant person. Another example is my classmate, who told me that when he worked at a company, he simply changed departments, and everything changed. The colleagues in the new department were friendlier, and he felt happier.

So, don’t think your current state defines your future. People can be very different when they interact with different people. There are various “chemical reactions”! It may not be easy to imagine how comfortable and fulfilling it would be when you find yourself in a suitable position where you can fully showcase your talents.

I hope everyone can live as their true selves.
