Viewpoint 002. About Learning

About Learning

Learning is a crucial skill in today’s world, possibly the most important one. The learning paths and tools have also evolved significantly compared to the past.

When we were young, we all learned at school, but the next generation may not follow the same path. Traditional education is cost-effective and ensures that everyone can receive an education. However, one teacher for dozens of students poses challenges. It’s hard for teachers to manage, and it’s difficult for students who struggle to keep up with the courses. Furthermore, being a good teacher is not easy, so it’s common for people to encounter ineffective teachers at some point in their lives.

Now, people can learn almost everything online. Although the certification system isn’t fully developed yet, some leading IT companies have already started to provide educational courses and certifications. For some companies, a traditional diploma isn’t necessary anymore; they focus more on the practical skills that employees possess.

Does this mean traditional education is going to be eliminated? Let’s discuss this from the perspective of active learning and passive learning. If a student is forced to learn something and spends 1,000 hours on it, will it be as efficient as a student who learns it actively? The answer is probably no. But how much less efficient is it? It depends on the situation, but in extreme cases, the efficiency could be zero.

I had a very bad experience learning English. We had to study English for six years in high school, but the classes weren’t suitable for me, so I felt stressed and ended up refusing to learn anything from class. Despite this terrible experience, I am now learning English actively. Maybe it’s because English is an important skill, and I want to heal the hurt from my childhood.

I’ve found that if you want to learn a new skill, practicing is as important as learning. They are like the left leg and right leg—if you want to learn how to walk, you must move both legs.

In the current generation, things change so fast, so the point is not what skill you have anymore, but whether you have the ability to learn and keep your mind open to new things.
