我們常常在戒菸廣告上
看到吸菸有害健康之類的標語
或是秀出一顆焦黑的肺
我們直覺的認為
這種警告性的訊息
應該能喝止不良習慣
但其實它們的效果非常有限
因為人腦在接受到負面訊息時
會傾向拒絕
以減少不舒服的感受
人們可能會說:
「唉呀!我的眼睛業障重呀!」
或是說:
「我知道我知道,但我不想面對咧!」
讓人真的很想給他呼下去
另一方面
如果是用正面鼓勵的機制
可以顯著的增加人們的動力
例如用數字化的方式
讓人們看到自己的成果
或是把團體內每個人的成果都顯示出來
大家就會有動力
想要做得比別人好
在某間醫院裡
就曾進行過這樣的實驗
如果醫護人員進出病房時有洗手
就會得到積分
並顯示在公告版上
結果洗手的次數大大的增加了
又或者是電力公司
在電費單上追加了
社區住戶的平均用電量
以及最節省的用戶的用電量
這樣一來
有許多人就會想要挑戰
省電第一名的地位
所以下次當你想要
鼓勵自己或別人改變行為時

Viewpoint Episode 22: The Transformative Power of Motivation
When discussing psychological issues, changing our own mindset is often the most suitable approach. However, there are times when we can also try to influence others’ behavior, especially if they are open to change.
This episode draws inspiration from a YouTube channel called “Podcast Speak English.” It explores ways to encourage people to build good habits and quit harmful addictions.
We often see anti-smoking ads with slogans like “Smoking is harmful to your health!” or images of blackened lungs. While we instinctively believe that these warnings can help people break bad habits, their effectiveness is actually quite limited.
In fact, when the human brain encounters negative messages, we tend to shut them out to avoid discomfort. People may say, “I know, I know, but I just don’t want to face it.”
On the other hand, positive messages can significantly increase motivation. For example, using digital tools to show individual progress or displaying group results can trigger a sense of competition.
An experiment in a hospital found that when medical staff earned points for washing their hands before and after visiting a patient’s room—and those points were displayed on a public board—their hand-washing frequency increased significantly.
Another example involves electricity bills. When power companies include the average and lowest electricity usage on the bill, people are more likely to try to perform better than the average and aim to reach the lowest record. So, the next time you want to influence someone’s behavior, consider using positive reinforcement like this.
