Viewpoint012. Generalists and Specialists

Generalists and Specialists

Have you heard of generalists and specialists?

Specialists are people who focus on one field and achieve amazing skills. They’re powerful and admired by others when placed in the right position.

On the other hand, generalists usually don’t have a specific skill, but they have a good ability to create and integrate. They can combine things together and evolve new functions.

Generally, specialists are more confident and respected because they have hard skills that can make practical things. In contrast, generalists, such as students studying management, often feel unconfident because they don’t have a specific skill.

But does it mean specialists are better than generalists?
Actually, I think it’s harder to be a generalist because creativity and integration are not easy to learn from books.

There is an idiom in China: “It’s easy to find a good horse, but it’s not easy to find someone who knows good horses.”

A good generalist, or a good leader, knows who they need to hire to achieve their goals.
If specialists are like our fingers, the parts that directly interact with things, then generalists are like the palm, responsible for connecting and coordinating the actions of all parts, thereby achieving greater goals and accomplishments.

However, as the idiom in China goes, a good person who knows good horses is hard to find. Despite this, it’s not difficult to be a good enough leader. Keep your mind open, respect team members, listen to them and provide support. You don’t need to pretend that you know everything. Learning how to delegate can always build a healthy and strong team.
